Unlocking potential: Helping students to succeed through donor-funded specialist tuition

Federation Insights Back

Hundreds of students across the Harris Federation succeeded in their GCSEs thanks, in part, to generous donor support which enabled students to receive one-to-one academic tutoring from specialist tutors.

We know disadvantaged young people - who make up at least 1 in 3 of the Harris student population - were most impacted by Covid pandemic school closures. We also know that, the effects of this disruption to children's education are still playing out now, and will continue to do so for years to come.

We are keen to do all we can to enable students to succeed - and donor support is crucial to this.

How tuition supports our students

Children across 12 Harris secondary academies have benefitted from the intensive 1-1 support, boosting not just their subject knowledge but also their confidence and self-belief. As well as in the core subjects of English, Maths, and Science, tutoring has been given to our students in Geography, History, MFL, and Music.

We're delighted to say that has translated to fantastic results!

Some success stories from the 2022/23 GCSE results

Harris Academy Morden

In March, Frankie-Sue was predicted a 5 in Maths. She was invited to tuition over the holidays. Frankie-Sue’s Maths teacher could see in lessons that the tuition was helping her become more confident. After having 1- 1 tuition, she went into her exam with a positive mindset and got a 7!

Harris Academy South Norwood

Whilst many of South Norwood's students benefitted from the tuition, one does stand out. His mum was fighting a long, difficult and extended battle with cancer. Understandably, there were times when he found attending school difficult. The donation allowed him to receive a mixture of online and in person tutoring. As a consequence of this he was able to achieve strong passes in all of his GCSE subjects.

Harris Academy Greenwich

Harris Academy Greenwich had a tutor who was fantastic; full of flair, optimism and energy, who helped six very vulnerable students, who were friends of one of Greenwich's students who sadly passed away during Year 11. With this help, they all passed Maths, which wouldn’t have been possible without the support the funding provided.

"Without Mr West I would’ve really struggled to pass maths" - Chloe

"My teacher is great but without the smaller group I would have found it so difficult" - Amy

And what's more...

...with so many graduate tutors using the role to step into careers in teaching, the impact of this kind donation will be seen for many future years.

Our deepest gratitude goes to the generous donors who have made all of this possible. Their unwavering commitment to education and willingness to invest in our students' futures are the driving forces behind the transformative impact the Federation is able to make.

Thanks to donor support, countless students have been given the extra tuition they need to excel academically and unlock their full potential. This generosity not only changes individual lives but also contributes to a brighter and more equitable future for our society as a whole.

Together, we can continue to make a profound difference in the lives and futures of students. If you are interested in supporting our work, please don't hesitate to get in touch with our Fundraising and Partnerships Team
