Making the most of recruitment fairs
In today’s digital age, many of us have grown accustomed to virtual interactions. Whether it’s through emails, video calls or social media; the charm of in-person dialogue has arguably become somewhat of a novelty. Whilst one can appreciate the convenience (and not to mention, rapidity) of these digital exchanges, they cannot always replicate the connection and authenticity of meeting people face-to-face.
With recent statistics indicating that 43% of companies are using some form of AI to interview potential hires, we’re taking a closer look into the unique advantages of attending in-person recruitment fairs, and how to make the most of these valuable events.
Make an impression
Recruitment fairs are more than just a chance to explore job opportunities - they are an opportunity to make meaningful connections, gain insights, and stand out in a crowded job market. Engaging directly with potential employers offers the perfect platform to ask questions, learn more about the workplace culture, and make sure that the job is the right fit for you.
Not only will you gain a rounded view of the personalities of your potential colleagues, but you will also have the opportunity to make a great first impression yourself. Making sure you’re dressed smartly and arrive well prepared with questions and a concise, articulate summary of your work history will help you stand out from other applicants.
Uncover hidden insights
A quick online search might give you surface-level details of the vision, values and achievements of your prospective employer, but a face-to-face discussion with current staff can lead to invaluable insight which you might not have otherwise sought. Speaking to members of leadership will give you an understanding not only of the personality and communication style of management, but also of their priorities and opportunities afforded to their teams for career development.
Make sure you are clear on your own core values and considerations before attending a recruitment fair and come prepared with questions for hiring managers. Consider what’s important to you in your job, be it career progression opportunities, work-life balance, team dynamics or the company culture. Prepare questions which will give you more insight than what you might find online, such as what a ‘day in the life of’ looks like, how teams interact and support one another, and stories of how current staff have advanced within the business.
Rehumanise the process
It can be hard to sell yourself as a professional when you’re looking at a screen. Typed responses can often lack the tone, nuance and personality that make you stand out in person. Similarly, when we interact with names on a page, we often overcomplicate or misinterpret the roles of those hiring. Meeting in person breaks down these barriers and introduces you to the human beings that sit behind the decision making. Eye contact, a firm handshake and the opportunity to make small talk here and there will make the entire application process feel less daunting, less transactional and much more personal. This in turn sets you up to confidently present the best version of yourself.
