About Harris Academy Rainham

Harris Academy Rainham (HAR) is a non-selective state school based in Rainham, Essex. We are committed to providing all pupils, irrespective of their background, with a strong academic education. We pride ourselves on a supportive working environment for all staff and value the importance of staff wellbeing.

HAR teachers follow the school ethos of Belong, Believe and Become as much as the pupils. The staff make you feel welcome and included in how the school is run and any changes being made. Members of SLT highlight opportunities to grow your teaching career as well as open communication. The school allows you to communicate effectively with parents to help develop a good parent-school relationship centred around what is best for the pupil. No day is the same, and I learn a lot from my pupils as well as learning about myself as a teacher.

Our people are at the heart of our success. We look for talented and ambitious individuals who share our vision for making HAR an exceptional school and are committed to ensuring that every child has access to the best possible education. Pursuing a career with us also gives you the chance to work alongside a highly capable and committed Senior Leadership team, who all teach, pay attention to workload pressures, and are highly visible around the school.

My experience since starting here at Harris Academy Rainham has been extremely positive. Staff here are so supportive of one another, and are highly driven to challenge students to achieve academic success.  The senior leadership team are fantastic at encouraging your growth as a middle leader and subject practitioner, through wider opportunities for professional development. I have learnt a lot since starting here at HAR working in this fast-paced, highly motivated environment and I am excited to continue my journey here.

Our commitment to students, results, and behaviour

We are rightly proud of our ambitious, knowledge rich curriculum that draws from the most important work in the arts, humanities, and the sciences. We believe that knowledge is a good in and of itself, empowering pupils to understand and take an interest in the world around them. We believe a secondary education is not just a preparation for work, but a preparation for life. As such, we value the knowledge of our teachers, and the passion for their subject that they bring to the classroom.

We have a firm but fair approach to behaviour:

  • Senior leaders see it as their responsibility to ensure all teachers can teach without disruption.
  • School rules are non-negotiable, and poor behaviour is met by escalating sanctions.
  • Pupil detentions are centralised and run every day by senior leaders.
  • Teachers can therefore prioritise planning and teaching their lessons.

We are very proud of our exam results at HAR. In 2022, our headline figures at GCSE are: 44% of entries were graded 9 to 7, and 92% were graded 9 to 4. Progress 8 was +0.45. Our pupils go on to study at some of the best sixth forms the local area.

As well as a knowledge rich education, the HAR runs an extensive co-curricular programme that encourages children to develop outside the classroom. The clubs are central to the school and give pupils the opportunity to try new activities and develop new interests. All staff are encouraged to share their co-curricular enthusiasm by committing one session a week to running a school club.
