Midweek Spotlight: Aspiring leader opportunities at Harris Invictus Academy Croydon Rss
Posted on: May 6th 2020
This week, we have fantastic range of middle and senior leadership opportunities available at Harris Invictus Academy Croydon. If you are an experienced teacher of Geography looking to join a highly motivated and successful academy in the Croydon area, this may be for you.
Geography provides students with the means to think about the world in new ways. We call this thinking geographically. Thinking geographically helps in the pursuit of truth. It is the pursuit of truth which distinguishes disciplinary knowledge from everyday social and cultural knowledge and is a priority for our curriculum.
At Harris, we are dedicated to honing our craft, understanding of pedagogy, and how it can be better applied to the young people we serve. As with many other subject areas, geography specialist consultants assist and lead new and improved direction of learning. Present to support and assist academy departments across the Federation, teachers and department heads can feel confident and supported in their roles.
Across the Federation, we operate and are highly visible within the ‘Geography Network.’ This consists of our talented geography consultants overseeing a group of 60+ geography teachers from across the Federation. There are six meetings throughout the year that are used to train teachers in effectively implementing the curriculum. There are also eight subject training days for beginner teachers as part of the Harris ITE programme, and four twilight sessions for NQTs.
Building on tried and tested methods by expert practitioners
With the support and involvement of our dedicated Federation consultancy team, academy departments are provided with expertise in pedagogy, subject knowledge and curriculum. Working closely to bring engaging, balanced and enriching learning experiences, teachers can expect to work and be advised on how best to move forward with curriculum to exactly how it is taught in the classroom.
Geography teachers as curriculum makers
Freeing students from the limitations of their experience (which is what schools at their best can do) is always potentially ‘alienating’; however the job of teachers is to help students go beyond, and sometimes resist, the cultural forces that they experience every day. As such, learning powerful geographical knowledge takes time and can challenge the very identity of learners - but it is worth it.
The Harris Federation Geography curriculum intends to be a complete curriculum insofar as it is accompanied by in-academy support for teachers and leaders, curriculum resources including schemes of work and lesson plans, summative assessments, training for teachers and leaders, and a robust process of quality assurance and evaluation.
Geography at Invictus
The HIAC Geography department has worked closely with Federation Geography Consultants since the Academy’s opening in September 2014. With the Academy now nearing full capacity, there is a Consultant on site for at least one day a week to provide support.
Are you ready? We are still recruiting!
In line with the Government’s announcement, our academy is closed until further notice. However, during this period it is our intention to continue with critical recruitment for key positions starting in September 2020.
In place of academy interviews, alternative options will be offered so that no one is at a disadvantage, and applicants should expect telephone or virtual interviews, with the possibility of onsite academy interviews only in special cases. We want to reassure applicants that effective measures have been implemented to ensure their health and wellbeing whilst on academy premises.
