Six Reasons to Choose the Harris Federation for your NQT Year

Posted on: September 13th 2018

A new government survey for NQTs has revealed high levels of satisfaction with new teachers’ induction years, with more than three quarters of respondents rating their NQT year between seven and 10 – and nearly half rating it either nine or 10.

So what makes a great induction year experience, and how does Harris help you get the best possible start to your teaching career?

1. Individuality and collaboration

The Harris academies are all very different, so you will always find your fit. This is extremely important as our future career and professional development will grow from your academy’s individual ethos and vision. But, you will have the added benefit of the whole Harris Federation  through the ongoing collaboration and sharing of best practice.

2. A flying start with our NQT Conference

All of Harris NQTs attend a dedicated NQT Conference early in the autumn term to introduce the Induction Programme and to meet key staff. In addition to high profile keynote speakers, there are a range of high quality workshops to create a training experience bespoke to you.

3. Challenge from exceptional educators

The Harris teachers and leaders who will support you through your NQT year are exceptional educators. At the Harris Federation, we pride ourselves on accepting only the highest standards of teaching and learning, with a healthy level of challenge helping you to flourish through induction and beyond.

A unique part of our programme is the subject and phase specialist training from our central team of consultants and outstanding practitioners. These bespoke sessions are an opportunity to develop specific skills and to network with colleagues across the Federation.

4. Extending your experience

Our NQT programme is designed to build on your training year, to further develop your classroom practice, self-evaluation, professional, and subject and curricular knowledge. We aim to extend what you learned in ITT to give you the confidence to succeed as a fully qualified teacher.

5. Support from a trained mentor

ITT Mentors were cited as a key element of success in the government report, and, as a Harris NQT, you will continue to benefit from that support in your induction. Your mentor will guide you through your first year as a qualified teacher, meeting with you each week and providing regular support so that you continue to develop excellent classroom practice. Mentors themselves are supported and trained in order to guide you towards a successful completion of your NQT year.

6. Support from your peers

With 47 academies in and around London, the Harris Federation welcomes a large number of NQTs to qualified teaching every year. This means you will have access to a supportive network of colleagues with whom to share ideas, experiences and best practice.
