Early Career Framework Reforms: What does it mean for our NQTs and mentors?

Training & Development Back

The early career framework is the evidence base which underpins this new entitlement for early career teachers’ professional development. It sets out what all early career teachers should learn about and learn how to do during the first 2 years of their careers. It includes sections on:

  • Behaviour Management
  • Pedagogy
  • Curriculum
  • Assessment
  • Professional Behaviours

The early career framework (ECF) was designed to make sure early career teachers focus on learning the things that make the most difference in the classroom and their professional practice. The core induction programmes include high-quality development materials, underpinned by the ECF, which will support early career teachers to develop the essential knowledge and skills to set them up for a successful and fulfilling career in teaching.

Earlier this month, the DfE set out their monumental step change for all early career teachers. Intending to provide more evidence-based training and development, this change will be able to shape our new teachers as better trained and more likely to stay within the profession. So, what does it all mean?

  1. Evidence based training and a balanced approach

Accessibility is a central feature of an evidence-based framework, where all NQTs can benefit from standardised training. In conjunction, freely available high-quality development materials based on the early career framework have been made available ahead of schedule so that the maximum number of newly qualified teachers can benefit from the support the ECF provides.

  1. Clearing the path to CPD

Connecting the career path from NQT to Leader, the ECF directly connects into the National Professional Qualifications. Building this career path means that the process is far more organic. Early career teachers will be able to continue developing themselves and their practice all throughout their career with the next steps clearly laid out in front of them.

  1. 2 years of training

From September 2021, the government is funding an entitlement for all early career teachers in England to access high quality professional development at the start of their career. New teachers will now receive development support and training over 2 years instead of one, underpinned by the early career framework.

  1. Mentor support

Mentorship continues to be a central part of the NQT experience, providing key support and insight. Protecting mentors in their practice and development has never been more important to ensuring NQTs can receive the help they need during their formative time.

In the changes to come, mentors will now be able to receive training in order to better support them in their roles. Alongside this, schools will now be able to receive funding for mentorship during the second year of the programme.
