Why did you choose to become a governor?

I chose to become a governor at Harris because I am passionate about contributing to the educational success of young people. My business background often provides a different perspective to other governors, aiding in strategic decision-making and resource management, which are crucial for an academy's growth and development. I have continued in the role because of the tangible impact I see our governance making on both student achievement and school development, creating a positive and enriching educational environment.

 

What have been the benefits of becoming a governor?

The role of a school governor provides numerous personal and professional opportunities. It offers a platform for building relationships with a wide array of professionals from different fields within the governing body, and fosters skill development in vital areas such as planning, decision-making, and collaborating. On a personal level, the role provides a fulfilling opportunity to create a positive impact in the lives of students, and grants an insightful perspective into the complexities, challenges, and the pivotal role education plays in shaping society.

 

What advice would you give someone considering being a governor?

Aspiring governors should be ready to dedicate the necessary time and effort to fulfill their responsibilities effectively. It’s crucial to take a proactive approach in understanding the academy’s strengths and areas that require improvement, as well as familiarising oneself with the strategic objectives of the school. Additionally, being open to continuous learning, and engaging in training and development opportunities is essential to enhance one's effectiveness and contribution to the governing body.
