Why did you choose to become a governor?

I was always involved in school when my kids were growing up – they are fully grown now, with children of their own. My career ended up taking me out of the country for a number of years, so when I stopped travelling, I decided to try and get back into helping again by applying to Governors for Schools to find a way to get involved locally, which has worked out well.

What have been the benefits?

The personal benefit of this role for me is the opportunity to show pupils that not all the people with this level of authority are what might be considered 'typical'. It also gives me great satisfaction to know I am helping to make a difference, however small, for some of the young people in Croydon.

What advice would you give someone interested in being a governor?

The role is important in ensuring the school leadership team are challenged. We are critical friends of the school, providing thoughts and suggestions on presented plans and policies. It is a very rewarding position, knowing you will have a small say in assuring the school considers all the pupils attending and not just the 'top set'. It is important too, to realise that if things were to go wrong, you would be questioned to ensure you have taken appropriate notice and steps to avoid and/or mitigate concerns - though thankfully I am involved in two very well-run schools and am proud of my involvement.
